Hi All. Thought I'd add my thoughts regarding the lan.
I apologise if I reiterate some stuff others have put, but i can't be bothered to read all the posts and make notes!
Negatives for me:
Firstly, someone suggested swapping seats and pc's? Sorry, but I wouldn't be happy with that, although I do agree more mingling would be good. I will say that I thought the seating layout was poor. Having people sat facing a wall with their backs to everyone doesn't encourage socialising. I think tables should be set up with people facing each other, to encourage eye contact and chatting.
The tournaments/big games. Were there any?? I played UT3 with the guys sat next to me Friday night. Saturday I played (well, tried to!) CoD4 with SBB. My framerate was appaling on the network, I kept getting kicked, with error messages, and it was like watching every 3rd frame in a movie. It was virtually unplayable for me. I also joined in the UT2k4 game, with 4 others! Not quite what I had hoped for. Sunday I played the TF2 big game. I'm not much good, but I enjoyed it (when I wasn't dying!) I was really looking forward to a RA2 big game. No other lan plays it and it's my favourite game. Where was it?? Did I miss it? Was it played?
Internet. I was told there would be ADSL. I wasn't informed of any limitations, although I wouldn't have used it much anyway. Then I found out it was a 1Mb line. Ok. Can't have everything. But why was Remote Desktop blocked?? I just wanted to check on my emails at home, while it was quiet. But I couldn't.
People screaming is a pet peeve of mine. During the day, it happens, most attendees at lans I've been to are teens or slightly older. They've not yet 'grown up', so to speak. As an 'old man' of 44, I feel I can say this. It's not meant as an insult, just a fact. But I got woken up at 5am Sat morning by some idiot screaming, and I do mean screaming, obscenities at the top of his voice. Maybe someone (an admin?) could have had a word with him? (If someone did, thank you.)
The water boiler. Why was it turned off all the time? The point of having a boiler is for a ready supply of hot water for drinks? If it's not going to be switched on all the time, wouldn't a kettle have been a better option?
Finally. I brought a small fridge with me for my drinks to go in. I left it outside as I was told the power wouldn't handle it in the hall. Not a problem. However, I did wonder why my drinks were not very cold, until I unplugged it Sunday and discovered someone had plugged it into a timer switch! Benefit of the doubt, maybe they thought they were plugging the boiler into it? Both plugs were black, so maybe..
Now positives:
What a great venue! Nice location, and no houses too close.
Secure, (it seemed to me?)
Loads of room in the main hall.
Separate sleeping room, plus plenty of camping space. I would definitely consider camping if I came again.
I personally don't drink much, but having a bar on site is nice.
Having a BBQ was a good idea, although I didn't make use of it. (You will never please everyone as regard the cooking!!)
Overall, I came away feeling somewhat disappointed. I feel the priority problems should be getting more organised games going, and getting people involved. I have spoken to Admins about this before, and I know how difficult it is. However, Admins are there to run things, and sometimes this means their own gaming suffers. It's an unfortunate result of running a lan. However, you don't know where to improve until you make a mistake, and I'm sure the next one will be much better.
